I mean, I never intended to become a dentist. I wanted to become an anesthesiologist. And I did a summer internship in the operating rooms. And part of my job, or a big part of my job, was running to get caffeine for the anesthesiologist so that we could keep them awake, because they’re absolutely bored stiff. I mean, they’re just…they’re trapped right there, sitting there behind their big panel. And they struggled with doing their job. They were bored stiff.
And I decided to go do something else. And it wasn’t until I had…you know, I went into environmental engineering, did pollution cleanup for a good six, seven years. That’s when I met Todd. Todd was my dentist at the time. He started talking with me one day and said, you know, “How come you didn’t go to dental school?” because that’s what we were talking about. And I told him why. And he said, “Why don’t you come watch what I do?” He says, “Have you ever thought of doing dentistry?” I said, “Never thought of it. I hate my dentist. I always hated my dentist. I’m still mad at my dentist from when I was a kid.”
He says, “No, it’s different.” He says, “Come watch what I do.” I watched him do a bridge on somebody. I hadn’t even heard of a bridge. It just blew me away. Watching how he was able to take care of his patients. He got them numb. It didn’t hurt them. They were happy being there. They were comfortable. They were relaxed. All this stuff that I had never experienced as a patient.
And he rocked my world. That was it. I mean, he totally opened my eyes to what dentistry could be. And I had a very distorted view of it up to that point. So I decided it was time to go to school. I went back to school to become a dentist. So I don’t have a… The dream to be a dentist since I was a child is not there. It was just once I had my eyes opened to it, it was, like, “Wow, I got to do this.”
